Ans. The characteristics features of algae are as follows:
1. These are chlorophyll-bearing plants with thallose plant bodies.
2. They have little differentiation of true tissue.
3. Even the complex forms of algae lack vascular tissue (xylem, phloem, etc.)
4. Sex organs are unicellular and non-jacketed and when multicellular, each cell is fertile.
5. There is no embryo formation after fertilization in the life cycle.
6. Most of the algae are aquatic.
7. When there are two phases, i.e., gametophytic and sporophytic phases in life cycle, they are independent of each other.
8. Under favourable conditions, the plant body reproduces asexually by means of mitosphores (formed after mitosis).
Some Famous Algologists or Phycologists
1. Dr. F. E. Fritsch : Famous international algologists and is known as the father of algae.
Famous Algologists of India
1. Ghose (1919) was the pioneer Indian worker who studied algae.
2. Prof. M.O.P. Iyenger : He was the student of Dr. F. E. Fritsch. Started study of algae in 1920 in Madras University. He is known as Father of modern Algology in India. His important contribution is discovered to terrestrial algae called Fritschiella tuberose.
3. In Madras (Chennai) besides Prof. Iyenger, other famous algological are Ramanthan, Balakrihnan and Desikachary.
4. In B.H.U. Prof. Y. Bhardwaj (student of Fritsch) and Prof. R. N. Singh. His important work is reclamation of saline usher land by growing blue green algae, also role of blue green algae in nitrogen economy of Indian agriculture. (Although, P. K. De was the pioneer in establishing the N2- fixing ability of blue-green algae)
5. Prof. H. D. Kumar worked on algae physiology. He also studied genetic recombination in Blue-green algae or Cyanophyceae or Myxophyceae or Cyanobacteria.
