Introduction of Computers: Computer application is the study of the operating principles of computers, programming languages of computers, and algorithms (and/or flowcharts) for solving problems. It involves the development and use of computer-related devices for data processing.

Basic Functions of a Computer

The basic functions of a computer are shown in the figure below.

1. Inputting: It is the process of entering data and instructions into the computer system. 

2. Storing: Saving data and instructions (typically on secondary storage devices like Hard Disk, and Floppy Disk) so that they are available for initial or for additional processing as and when required.

3. Processing: Processing means performing arithmetic operations or logical operations on data in order to convert it into useful information.

4. Outputting: Outputting is the process of producing useful information or results for the user, such as a printed report or visual display.

5. Controlling: Controlling means directing the manner and sequence in which all of the above operations are performed.

Characteristics of a Computer

The power and usefulness of the computer are mainly due to its following characteristics:

1. Automatic: Computers are automatic machines because once started on a job, they carry on until the job is finished, normally without any human assistance.

2. Speed: A computer is a very fast device. It takes only a few seconds for calculations that we take hours to complete. A powerful computer is capable of performing several billion (109) simple arithmetic operations per second. So, we determine the speed of the computer in terms of microseconds (10-6) or nanoseconds (10-9).

3. Accuracy: A computer is very accurate. The accuracy of a computer is consistently high and the degree of accuracy of a particular computer depends upon its design.

4. Diligence: Unlike human beings, a computer is free from tiredness and lack of concentration. It can continuously work for hours, without creating any errors.

5. Versatility: It means the capacity to perform completely different types of work. You may use your computer to prepare payroll slips. Next moment you may use it for inventory management or to prepare a letter.

6. Power of Remembering: A computer can store and recall any amount of information because of its secondary storage capability.

7. No Feelings: It does not have feelings or emotions, taste, knowledge, and experience. Thus, it does not get tired even after long hours of work.

8. No 1.Q.: A computer is a dumb machine and it cannot do any work without instructions from the user. It is up to you to decide what you want to do and in what sequence.

So, a computer cannot take its own decision as you can.

Limitations of a Computer

Nearly everyone has at some time found an error in a computer-generated bill. If we have to truly understand computers and how to integrate them into our lives, we must understand their limitations as well as their strengths. Computer “mistakes” generally fall into one of four categories:

1. Hardware errors which are genuine computer mistakes.

2. Input errors or mistakes in entering data.

3. Software errors or mistakes in programming the computer.

4. Output errors or mistakes in interpreting outputs.

The later three are not computer mistakes but human errors.
